Opera singing

1. Applicants

The course is open to a maximum of 12 candidates per teacher of any nationality between the age of 18 and 35.

2. Purpose of the course

The course is aimed at the higher level of improvement of the singer's lyrical vocal and interpretative technique. It includes individual and group lessons, combined with an intense work experience activity within the productions of the Coccia Theater in Novara, which allows you to experience direct experience on stage.

3. Duration

The course is annual and will take place at the Coccia Theater in Novara in several noncontinuous periods from JANUARY 2025 to DECEMBER 2025. The lessons will be planned in accordance with the Theater's programming, with particular attention to musical theater productions and in parallel with the lesson of the other courses. In the event of interruption of the course "due to force majeure", we will proceed with Distance Learning mode via the dedicated online platform for theoretical lessons, while practical ones and work experience periods will be postponed. At the end of the course, a certificate of attendance will be issued, subject to satisfaction of the conditions set out in point 8 of this Open Call (see below).

4. Training program

The course will be structured in 25 days of theoretical and practical lessons with compulsory attendance and approximately 50 days of work experience available throughout the year. The program is aimed at the study of the lyrical repertoire and contemporary opera, together with the creation of productions included in the program for the 2025 season.
The Theater management, in agreement with the relevant teachers, will select suitable students for the roles in the productions of the Theater calendar. The selected students will receive a fee which will be communicated at the time of selection.
The calendar of lessons may undergo changes which will be communicated to the students promptly.

5. Application procedure

To access the selection, it is necessary to send the following documents by email (subject of the email “AMO – COURSE FOR OPERA SINGERS”):

  • This Open Call filled in all its parts and initialed on each page;
  • Completed application form (attachment A) with copy of the identity document and tax code NB: (foreigners are also required to send valid visa / permit of stay, or adequate documentation certifying their renewal);
  • Detailed educational and artistic Curriculum;
  • Video of 2 arias of your choice from the traditional opera repertoire, of which at least one in Italian (send link to YouTube with date and place of recording);
  • Payment receipt by bank transfer to the Fondazione Teatro Carlo Coccia di Novara IBAN IT 80 X 05034 10100 000000042424 of the application fee of € 40,00 (VAT included).
    NB Bank commission costs are entirely borne by the candidates.

ATTENTION: all the files requested above must be sent in complete and correct PDF format (NO PHOTOS).

For students who have already attended one year of the Course and wish to enroll in subsequent years, it is still required to send the admission application accompanied by points 1, 2, 3 and 5 as stated above. The sending of video materials is not required whereas a new payment of the application fee of € 40 is required.

6. Selection

The candidates will be selected based on the videos sent; the teachers reserve the possibility of a further in-person audition which will be held at the Coccia Theater in Novara at the beginning of November 2024. For the live audition, candidates must present 4 arias from the traditional opera repertoire in the original language, of which at least 3 in Italian, to be sang from memory. An accompanying pianist for the audition will be provided by the Theater upon request of the candidate at the time of registration; it is mandatory to provide a copy of the score of the scheduled songs via email and bring a copy which will be given to the pianist for performance. Candidates have the right to be accompanied, at their own expenses, by their own pianist.

7. Deadlines and terms
  • no later than midnight GMT+1 on Tuesday 1 October 2024 applications for admission, accompanied by what is indicated in point 5, must be sent to the e-mail address segreteria.amo@fondazioneteatrococcia.it;
  • by Wednesday 16 October 2024 the results of the selections and the possible call for the in-person audition will be sent to the candidates;
  • at the end of any in-person hearings that will take place over the next few days Wednesday 06th e Thursday 07 November 2024, the names of the candidates admitted to the course will be communicated;
  • the course will begin in January 2025.
8. Costs and conditions of participation

The annual participation fee for the course, covering January 2025 to December 2025, is € 1.950,00 (VAT included), for admitted students.

The participation fee must be paid in 2 installments of € 975,00 each each by bank transfer to Fondazione Teatro Carlo Coccia di Novara.

NB: it is MANDATORY to send the payment receipt to the e-mail address segreteria.amo@fondazioneteatrococcia.it
If the installments are not paid on time as specified, attendance at the course will be suspended.

Students residing outside the regions of Piedmont and Lombardy will be able to take advantage of the 2025 accommodation agreements.

A minimum attendance of 80% is required for the course. This level of attendance is also necessary to participate in any theater productions. Any issues that might partially affect your participation in lessons and productions must be communicated to the academy secretariat.

Through special promotions, students will have the opportunity to attend the season's scheduled shows at the Coccia Theater in Novara as audience members.
