Opera Choir

Carlo Senatore is a teacher of literature and pianist, choir conductor and composer, who in his work as a teacher and musician has always combined a vocation for all forms of creative expression – linked to sound, speech and sociality – with a project oriented towards interdisciplinarity and the educational function of the artistic experience.

He studied vocalism, choral conducting and choral singing at the Scuola Civica in Milan, under the guidance of Mino Bordignon, and later at the Istituto Modai in Turin and the Fondazione Guido d’Arezzo in Arezzo – where he was taught by masters such as Lorenzo Donati, Roberto Gabbiani, Nicole Corti, Nino Tagliareni, Romano Pezzati, Peter Neuman, Walter Marzilli, Luigi Marzola – he obtained a diploma in Piano and a middle degree in Composition at the Conservatorio Guido Cantelli in Novara, graduating in Modern Literature at the University of Eastern Piedmont.

He has been collaborating maestro of the Langhi Academy of Novara and of the UECO orchestra at the Coccia Theatre of Novara for the staging of the lyrical fable “Ghirlino” by Luigi Ferrari Trecate and has also collaborated as choir artist and preparatory maestro – under the direction of Mino Bordignon, Alberto Veronesi, Antonello Gotta, Gerhard Jenemann, Carlo Pavese, Gianna Fratta – in productions, choral and symphonic concerts, radio broadcasts and recordings for organisations and musical seasons such as: MiTo Settembre Musica, Amici della Scala in Milan, Conservatories of Milan and Turin, Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie and Palazzo Reale in Milan, Herkulessaal der Residenz in Munich, Incontro Polifonico Internazionale in Fano, Fränkische Musiktage in Alzenau and München, Teatro Coccia in Novara, Orchestra d’Archi De Sono, Orchestra della Compagnia d’Opera Italiana, Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, Süddeutsche Kammerchor and Junge Deutsche Philharmonie.

He is the author of vocal and instrumental music – above all of a scenic nature, for choirs and youth orchestras – often produced as part of school workshops on creativity and musical composition inspired by literary classics (from Dante Alighieri to Saint Francis of Assisi, from Carlo Collodi to Gianni Rodari and Peter Weiss) and is one of the composers selected by Feniarco for the musical and recording anthology dedicated to children’s and youth choirs, in the centenary of Gianni Rodari. His lyrical tale “Un mago per l’Orchestra” for soloists, choir and orchestra, reciting voices and mimes was performed under the artistic direction of Michele Fedrigotti and the Novara Conservatory.

For the festival “Passio – Cultura e arte intorno al mistero pasquale” (Cultural Project of the Italian Church) he commissioned and conducted “Chori Patris – Polifonie della Passione” by Marco Ferretti (1974), a work in six musical sections for Grand Choir, Chamber Choir, Children’s Choir and Wind Quintet, premiered at the Basilica of San Gaudenzio in Novara with the participation of Claudia Koll and Francesco Carnelutti. Under the patronage of the International Labour Organisation (UNO), MIUR and the associations ANBIMA and FENIARCO he was the national coordinator of the festival committee “Today – Music against Child Labour: from children’s rights to social justice”, taking care of the project and the artistic direction of the musical fairy tale “Il Sogno di Pinocchio” for Children’s Choir, actors and corps de ballet, soloists and youth orchestra – with music by Michele Fedrigotti and Lorenzo Donati – presented at the Borgo Medievale in Turin and the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, on the occasion of the “World Day against Child Labour”.

On behalf of FENIARCO he signed the manifesto “Music against child labour” supported by maestros Claudio Abbado and José Abreu, ideally committing choral ensembles of all kinds and generations to the defence of human dignity, against child exploitation and for social justice. As part of this campaign, he conducted the Milano Classica Chamber Orchestra and a representation of choirs from Piedmont and Spain with music by Verdi and Puccini.

Committed to the promotion of musical activity as a means of social recovery and integration, he organised with Jhonny Gomez and Naybeth Garcia, founders of the Manos Blancas choir in Venezuela, and in collaboration with the ACP, a choral course involving over 1500 young people, promoting the birth of the first choir of the Ente Nazionale Sordi (Novara section). He also collaborated in the “Cantatutti” project proposed by the Cantascuola association of Turin and the Compagnia di San Paolo, as an expert in the formation of choirs in Piedmontese schools of all levels. He collaborates with local authorities and associations such as the Alessandro Novali School of Music and Singers, in the planning and implementation of preparatory, school and youth music workshops, which integrate vocal and choral music, creative writing and stage training, with special attention to the involvement of young people and adults: pupils, parents and teachers. One example is the project on environmental awareness “Lo Infinito Canto” – an original musical fable for soloists, children’s choir, vocal and instrumental ensemble – inspired by St. Francis’ Canticle of the Creatures.

With the prestigious collaboration of the University of Missouri (USA) and the Laeti Cantores Association of Salerno, he organised the seminar on American music production and choral culture “I AM CHORAL – Singing Beyond Borders”, hosted by Paul Crabb and Roberto Maggio. Under the auspices of the Associazione Cori Piemontesi and FENIARCO, he participated with the vocal ensemble A.N.I.M.A. in the European Commission’s “Creative Europe” programme, as part of the project “Voix d’Enfants / Espace scenique – Voci in movimento”, and was invited to hold a choral workshop at the “Edwige Feuillère” theatre in Vessoul.

A former board member of the Società Italiana per l’Educazione Musicale (SIEM – Novara) and of the Società Valsesiana di Cultura, he has researched unpublished works by the Piedmontese musician Carlo Fassò (1821-94) – choirmaster and singing teacher in Novara and Turin, director of the Liceo Musicale and of the orchestra of the Teatro Regio – the results of which have appeared in advance in the periodical De Valle Sicida and in the Quaderni published by FAI for the Giornate di Primavera. As a researcher he has collaborated with the Istituto dei Beni Musicali in Piemonte on the census of musical sources in the province of Vercelli, for the series Cataloghi di Fondi Musicali Piemontesi published by Libreria Musicale Italiana (LIM). For the Associazione Cori Piemontesi, of which he is a board member, he was a speaker at the first edition of the “Stati generali della coralità” held in Rome by FENIARCO in January 2020 – with a speech on “Musica scomposta: didattica, direzione, vocalità, repertorio e interpretazione” – and at the second edition of the webinar cycle “Polifonie e dintorni”. He was also a speaker at the conference “Focus on music in schools”, organised by the Orchestra da Camera Milano Classica and the Municipality of Milan at the Palazzina Liberty in Milan, and at the presentation of the national plan “Music in schools for the education of citizens”, in Rome, at the Sala della comunicazione of the MIUR, in the presence of the Minister Stefania Giannini and Prof. Luigi Berlinguer, President of the “National Committee for the practical learning of music” (6 October 2014). As artistic director and choirmaster, he has performed in numerous concerts, festivals and music reviews, working with vocal ensembles and orchestras, theatre companies and dance schools in Italy and abroad.
