Coordinating teacher: Paoletta Marrocu and Giovanni Botta

1. Applicants

The course is open to a maximum of 15 candidates of any nationality between the age of 18 and 35.

2. Purpose of the course

The course aims at gaining a master-class improved vocal technique and at enhancing the interpretative technique of the singers. It includes individual and group classes, improvisation, diction and theatre playing skills classes, along to an intense work experience among Teatro Coccia in Novara’s productions, which leads to a first-hand experience of the stage.

3. Duration

The course will take place at the Teatro Coccia in Novara and will be divided into several not continuous periods starting from November 2023 to October 2024. The lessons will be planned in accordance with the theater’s schedule, with particular attention to musical theater productions and alongside with other courses’ classes. In case of course’s interrup-tion "due to force majeure" we will proceed with Distance Learning mode through the de-dicated online platform for theoretical lessons, while practical lessons and work experience periods will be postponed. At the end of the course, a certificate of attendance will be issued, upon a correct following of the procedures as described at point 8 (see below).

4. Training program

The annual course will be divided in 22 days of theoretical and practical lessons and 50 days of work experience*. The program is aimed at the studying of the opera and contemporary opera repertoire and at staging productions of season 2023-2024.

There will be two master-classes in the course, each led by the Teachers mentioned above, for which candidates shall indicate their preference upon submission of the application form:

Paoletta Marrocu: her marvelous voice’s versatility and knowledge of different singing styles and techniques have allowed her to sing in more than 50 Opera playings; her master class course aims at studying the interpretative techniques of the traditional and contemporary opera repertoire.

Giovanni Botta: is director and head of RossiniLab-Cantelli; his master class course aims at a deep study of the working and interpretative techinques, as well as of the vocal aesthetics in Goacchino Rossini.

The course provides with 104 hours of lessons, on diction, improvisation and playing, in col-laboration with STM – Scuola del Teatro Musicale.
The direction of the theater, in accordance with the teachers, will select suitable students who will take part in the Theatre season’s productions. Selected students will get a cachet that will be communicated upon the selection.
By attending the course, students have the possibility to freely attend the Rossini Lab – Cantelli (upon selection), a 3-4 weeks course dedicated to the singers who would like to study Rossini’s repertoire, and to join the linked production of Teatro Coccia, thus adding *15 work experience days to their training plan. The project is held in collaboration with Fondazione “Rossini” in Pesaro and Rossini Opera Festival.
The calendar of meetings will be shared after the outcome of admission. The calendar may be subject to changes that will be promptly communicated to students.
To those who submit their application form to this Course is kindly recommended the submission to the Course in Opera Choir Amo as well.

5. Application procedure for selection

To enter selections, it will be necessary to send by e-mail (subject of the e-mail "AMO - CORSO CANTO LIRICO") the following documents:

  • Completed application form (attachment A) with photocopy F/R of your ID and fi-scal code; (for foreigners, it is also required to send documents of stay that are valid for the period of class); Candidates are required to specifically write for which master -class (M° Marrocu or M° Botta) they are submitting;
  • Detailed educational and artistic Curriculum;
  • 2 video recordings containg the performance of 2 arie of own choice from the tradi-tion opera repertoire (one of them strictly in Italian), to be sent with a link to YouTube with date and place of recording;
  • Receipt of payment by bank transfer in favour of Fondazione Teatro Carlo Coccia di Novara IBAN IT 80 X 05034 10100 000000042424 of the application fee of € 40,00 (IVA included).

Those who have already attended the Course and would like to apply for another year are kindly requested to submit their new application form and artistic curriculum. Please notice that the video and recordings are not requested for second application, whereas the appli-cation fee of € 40 is requested.

6. Selection

Selection will include the video recordings; Teachers may call for a live audition at Teatro Coccia in Novara in October. For the live audition candidates shall perform 4 arie from the traditional opera repertoire in original language (3 of them strictly in Italian), to be sung by heart.

7. Deadlines and time limits
  • by and no later than 24:00 GMT+1 on September 22, 2023 the applications for admis-sion, accompanied by what is indicated in point 5, must be sent to the e-mail address segreteria.amo@fondazioneteatrococcia.it;
  • by September 28, 2023 selected candidates will be notified of the result and possibly told date and time of the live audition by e-mail;
  • after the live auditions admitted candidates will be named;
  • The course will start in November 2023.
8. Costs and conditions to participation

The course fee for admitted students for a year (November 2023- October 2024) is € 1.850,00 (IVA included), including teaching handouts and scores of the works of the training plan.

The participation fee must be paid in 2 installments of € 925,00 each by bank transfer in favor of Fondazione Teatro Carlo Coccia di Novara IBAN IT 80 X 05034 10100 000000042424 and sending the receipt of payment to the e-mail address segreteria.amo@fondazioneteatrococcia.it

Deadline of the 1° installment: within the beginning of the classes (to be communicated)
Deadline of the 2° installment: by January 2024
It is specified that if the installments are not regularly paid within the specified time, will be interrupted attendance at the course.

The costs of food and acomodation will be at the expense of the students, who can benefit of the agreements that Teatro Coccia Foundation has entered into with hotels and restau-rants in the city.

Frequency in the course is required for a minimum of 80%. Frequency is needed also to take part in the productions. Any needs that may partially compromise participation in the les-sons and productions must be communicated to the secretariat of the Academy. A man-datory participation is required, concerning the “Aida” production from the second half of June 2024 (more details to come).

The students will have the opportunity, thanks to a special membership, to participate as an audience to all the performances of the Teatro Coccia season.
