Opera Choir

1. Applicants

The course is open to a maximum of 28 candidates of any nationality between the age of 18 and 35. The minimum number of candidates to activate the course is 16.

2. Purpose of the course

The course is aimed at the higher level of perfecting vocal and interpretative technique related to the symphonic opera choral repertoire. It includes individual and group lessons, diction lessons, stage movement and choreography, together with an intense work experience activity within the productions of the Teatro Coccia of Novara, which allows you to live the direct experience of the stage.

 

3. Duration

The course will take place at the Teatro Coccia in Novara and will be divided into several not
continuous periods starting from January 2022 to June 2022. The lessons will be planned in accordance with the theater’s schedule, with particular attention to musical theater productions and alongside with other courses’ classes. In case of course’s interruption “due to force majeure” we will proceed with Distance Learning mode through the dedicated online platform for theoretical lessons, while practical lessons and work experience periods will be postponed.

 

4. Training program

The course will be divided in 24 days of theoretical and practical lessons.
The study programme is aimed at training the professional figure of the symphonic opera choir artist and satisfies both the in-depth study of the skills required for choral musical activity and the study of the repertoire needed to tackle the tests required for auditions and competitions for choir artists in the main opera houses, including:

• improvement of melodic and rhythmic reading, ear training;
• diction in the main opera languages (Italian, French, German, Russian, English);
• harmonic listening and choral improvisation;
• elements of score analysis, aesthetics and musical dramaturgy;
• body movement education and basic dance techniques;
  gestures and stage movement;
• individual vocality;
• functionality of the voice in relation to space and stage movement;
• monodic and polyphonic singing;
• songs and excerpts from the opera repertoire required in auditions at major opera houses;
• opera productions of the Teatro Coccia in Novara;
• excerpts from operettas and musicals;
• Work experience in the productions of the Teatro Coccia in Novara.

The calendar of meetings will be shared after the outcome of admission. The calendar may be subject to changes that will be promptly communicated to students.

5. Application procedure for selection

In order to be admitted to the selection it is necessary to send the following documents by e-mail (subject of the e-mail “AMO – CORSO CORO LIRICO”):

• Completed application form (attachment A) with photocopy F/R of your ID and fiscalcode;
  *For foreigners is also required to send documents of stay;
• Detailed educational and artistic curriculum;
• Receipt of payment by bank transfer in favour of Fondazione Teatro Coccia Onlus IBAN IT 80 X 05034 10100 000000042424 of the application fee of € 40,00 (IVA included).

6. Selection

Students who have passed the pre-selection through video material will be able to participate in the live audition to be held at the Teatro Coccia in Novara in the first two weeks of November 2021.
For the live audition, candidates must present two arias of cantabile or portamento character, taken from the opera repertoire from the 18th century to the present day, and the performance of a contrapuntal extract taken from the polyphonic repertoire, chosen by the candidate. The test will also include the performance of vocalisations and sight-readings, chosen by the committee, and a presentation of the candidate’s studies and musical experience to date.

The accompanist for the audition will be provided, upon request of the candidate at the time of application; it is mandatory to provide a copy of the score of the pieces in the program by e-mail and bring a copy that will be given to the pianist for the performance. Candidates are free to have their own pianist at their own expense.

7. Deadlines and time limits

•  by and no later than 24:00 GMT+1 on November 1, 2021 the applications for admission, accompanied by what is indicated in point 5, must be sent to the e-mail address segreteria.amo@fondazioneteatrococcia.it
• by November 4, 2021 suitable candidates will be notified of the date and time of the audition by e-mail;
• in the first two weeks of November 2021 the auditions will be held at the Teatro Coccia in Novara;
• at the end of the auditions the names of the candidates admitted to the course will be communicated.

 

8. Cost and conditions of participation

The course fee for admitted students is € 800,00 (IVA included), including teaching handouts and scores of the works of the training plan.

The participation fee must be paid in 4 installments of € 200,00 each by bank transfer in favor of Fondazione Teatro Coccia Onlus IBAN IT 80 X 05034 10100 000000042424 and sending the receipt of payment to the e-mail address segreteria.amo@fondazioneteatrococcia.it

Deadline 4 installments: 1/12/2021 – 12/01/2022 – 23/02/2022 – 06/04/2022
It is specified that if the installments are not regularly paid within the specified time, will be interrupted attendance at the course.

The costs of food and acomodation will be at the expense of the students, who can benefit of the agreements that Teatro Coccia Foundation has entered into with hotels and restaurants in the city.

It is necessary to assure attendance at the course for both theoretical-practical hours and for work experiences that requires an active participation by all the students of the course. Any needs that may partially compromise participation in the lessons and productions must be communicated to the secretariat of the Academy.

The students will have the opportunity, thanks to a special membership, to participate as an audience to all the performances of the Teatro Coccia season.
